This weblog has been created to be a more successful outlet for my life. I’ve noticed that right now it does resemble a personal blog than anything else, but I can live with it being a hybrid. More to the point, it was fabricated so I could document my upcoming project on wardriving. So let’s get started, why am I doing this? Well, I’m quite fascinated with wireless network technology and how it’s been proliferated over the last few years. Tracking wireless access points (APs) had been one of the things I’ve wanted to do since I was able to drive, and I’ve got the opportunity now to do it.But why was I inspired to do it in my car? My car is a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 short regular cab. Great, a truck. It was a hand-me-down and in decent condition, I can’t really complain. But the ‘centerpiece’ feature of it really which relates to this is the middle seat, which is an integral box. It folds down, opens up, and guess what it can hold? Yes, my poor estranged 12″ iBook G3. Not exactly the best box for wardriving, but it doesn’t have to be. It fits perfect, almost suspiciously perfect, except for the fact that I couldn’t plug in any peripherals, including the oh-so-important power cable, since the ‘Book’s battery is pretty much dead. It’s been awhile since I’ve updated this, but right now I believe I have everything I need. Below is a list of things I have that I consider my Wardriving rig:
- iBook G3 12″ 900MHz 640MB RAM Apple AirPort
- 2000 Dodge Ram 1500
- KisMAC wireless network utility
- USGlobalSat BU-353 GPS receiver
- Edimax EW-7318USg USB card with an external RP-SMA adapter
- 9dBi omnidirectional antenna
- USB hub, a mount, and other assorted sexiness
So far I’ve only done some test runs, and I haven’t done any significant work yet. Still looking forward to when I can though.
